Meet Matt

Coach Matthew Dougherty is a world-class athlete, esteemed coach, and passionate ambassador for the running culture. His experience in endurance events ranges from clocking two world records in snowshoeing, crossing seven Ironman finish lines, and coaching two individualNational Marathon Champions at the college level.

Today, Dougherty is offering his coaching services to prospective athletes who are interested in discovering their peak potential as a distance runner, triathlete, or track athlete. Coach Dougherty has twelve years experience coaching college cross country and track teams at Houghton College, Eastern Mennonite University, and Paul Smith’s College. Dougherty has sustained successful programs, advanced growing programs, and built new programs from the ground up. His unique and proven training methods have produced National Champions, All-Americans, American Mid-East Conference Champions and Records, Team All-Academic andService Awards, and Academic All-Americans.

More important to Dougherty, however, is his teams’ recognition for being athletes of integrity, character, and sportsmanship. One of his proudest achievements was when his women’s cross country team was named the Buffalo Funds Champions of Character Team of the Year at the

2011 NAIA National Championships. Coach Dougherty’s understanding of athlete development, peak performance and injury prevention is rooted in his experience as USA Triathlete and Adventure Racer. Dougherty has excelled at the top of the podium, and suffered at the downfalls of injury, learning and recovering in a way that has made him faster, stronger and smarter. His ability to coach successful endurance athletes is a result of experience, extensive research, empathy, involvement and raw passion for the sport.

Dougherty owes much to his talented and dedicated wife, Mary, for the role she plays in assisting his coaching endeavors, and contributing her perspective as an accomplished athlete. Matt and Mary are proud parents of their energetic one-year old, Daphne.
